The moment a vessel crosses the 12 nautical miles limit while proceeding to the high seas, it is navigating in international waters. The skipper, therefore, needs to be conversant with international regulations and is expected to abide by them. He/she shall be required to be proficient in using navigational charts, among many other technical aspects of navigation.
Lesson Objectives
Develop Advanced Chartwork Competence: Train learners to accurately plot positions, bearings, courses, and tidal calculations on nautical charts, with increasing complexity from coastal navigation (24 NM) to extended ocean passages.
Develop Advanced Chartwork Competence: Train learners to accurately plot positions, bearings, courses, and tidal calculations on nautical charts, with increasing complexity from coastal navigation (24 NM) to extended ocean passages.
Apply International Standards for Safe Navigation Ensure learners can integrate chartwork with COLREGS, international conventions, and seamanship principles, enabling them to confidently navigate vessels beyond 24 NM into open sea and oceangoing routes.
- How to plan a voyage at sea
- How to apply the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) to ensure timely actions are taken to avoid collisions
- How to use the radar for collision avoidance manoeuvres
- How to become proficient in using navigational charts, GPS, magnetic compass, radar, and echo sounder.
- How to speak with confidence on a VHF marine radio.
- How to interpret meteorological data
- How to use the principle of ‘’Plane Sailing’’ to avoid total reliance on navigational aids in determining your position at sea
- How to contribute in Search and Rescue operations
- How to build confidence as a Sea Captain.
You will be taught plotting positions on charts, drawing True courses, plotting fixes, and conversion of Compass courses/bearings into True courses/bearings by using CADET RULE.
Charts, parallel rulers, dividers, pencils, and soft erasers shall be provided.
You will also be required to do Revision work on your own based on THE SKIPPER’S COMPANION by Captain O.Kishun. The instructors will assist you if you have difficulty answering the Multiple-Choice Questions in the book.

Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate advanced chartwork competence by accurately plotting positions, bearings, courses, and tidal calculations for both coastal (24 NM) and oceangoing navigation.
Have the ability to apply COLREGS in simulated and theoretical navigation scenarios, demonstrating knowledge of collision-avoidance rules. Integrate chartwork practices such as SOLAS requirements for safety of life at sea.
Prepare and execute safe passage plans that integrate tidal streams, variation and deviation, meteorology, and hazard awareness, enabling informed navigational decision-making in both coastal and open-sea contexts
